Man Arrested in Retail Robbery Investigation,
Toronto and Peel Region areas,
Carlton Matsinde, 25,
One suspect still outstanding

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of an arrest made in a retail robbery investigation.

On Monday, March 14, 2022, police responded to a hold-up call in the Danforth Road and Birchmount Road area.

It is alleged that:

  • two men approached a jewellery store wearing masks to disguise their identity
  • the men tried to enter but the employee locked the interior door
  • the men forced open the locked door and entered the store
  • one man was armed with a shotgun and the other a hatchet
  • the men began smashing the display cases and removing a number of jewellry items
  • the men tried to leave but the exterior door was locked
  • a physical altercation ensued between the suspects and the employees
  • one of the employees suffered minor injuries
  • the men escaped via the rear exit door and fled the area

On Monday, September 5, 2022, police responded to a robbery call in the Lake Shore Boulevard West and Strachan Avenue area.

It is further alleged that:

  • a man attended a ticket booth where two employees were counting cash at the end of the work day
  • the man was armed with a revolver and forced the employees into the booth area as he made a demand for cash
  • the man took a quantity of cash before fleeing the area

Officers located the man and took him into custody.  Further investigation revealed the man was involved in the jewellery store robbery.

It is further alleged that:

  • at the time of the arrest, officers seized a replica handgun, a taser and a quantity of stolen cash

Carlton Matsinde, 25, of Toronto, was arrested. He has been charged with:

  1. Robbery with a Firearm
  2. Robbery
  3. Use Imitation Firearm During Commission of Indictable Offence
  4. two counts of Disguise with Intent
  5. Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  6. Possession of Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  7. Possession of Prohibited Device Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized 
  8. Possession of Firearm with Ammunition
  9. Possession of Firearm Obtained by Crime
  10. Two counts of Weapons Dangerous
  11. Conspiracy to Commit Indictable Offence
  12. two counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime 

He appeared in court for a bail hearing on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Old City Hall, room 111.

The investigation remained ongoing and revealed that the accused had also been involved in five other retail store robberies.

On Tuesday, July 5, 2022, police responded to a robbery call in the Danforth Avenue and Pape Avenue area.

It is further alleged that:

  • a man entered a nail salon while disguising his identity with a mask and wearing gloves
  • the man approached an employee who was counting cash from the register and pushed them ot of the way
  • the man stole a quantity of cash
  • the man produced a taser and activated it
  • the man exited the store and fled the area

On Friday, August 12, 2022, police responded to a robbery call in the Fort York Boulevard and Dan Leckie Way area.

It is further alleged that:

  • a man entered a coffee shop while disguising his identity with a mask and wearing gloves 
  • the man jumped over the counter and pulled out a taser while making a demand for cash
  • the man took a quantity of cash before fleeing the area

On Sunday, August 21, 2022, police responded to a robbery call in the Rexdale Boulevard and Islington Avenue area.

It is further alleged that:

  • a man entered a gas station while disguising his identity with a mask and gloves
  • the man was armed with a taser and made a demand for cash
  • the man took a quantity of cash and other merchandise before fleeing the area

On Saturday, August 27, 2022, police responded to a robbery call in the Steeles Avenue East and Kennedy Road South area in Peel Region.

It is further alleged that:

  • a man entered a gas station while disguising his identity with a mask and wearing gloves
  • the man was armed with a handgun and made a demand for cash
  • the man stole a quantity of cash before fleeing the area

On Friday, September 2, 2022, police responded to a person with a gun call in the Lake Shore Boulevard West and Thirteenth Street area.

It is further alleged that:

  • a man entered a convenience store while disguising his identity with a mask and wearing gloves
  • the man was armed with a handgun and made a demand for cash
  • the man stole a quantity of cash before fleeing the area

On Monday, September 19, 2022, Carlton Matsinde, 25 of Toronto was further charged wtih:

  1. five counts of Robbery with Offensive Weapon
  2. five counts of Disguise with Intent
  3. five counts of Weapons Dangerous
  4. two counts of Use Imitation Firearm During Commission of Indictable Offence
  5. three counts of Possession of Prohibited Device

He was scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Toronto East Court, in courtroom 412.

One suspect remains outstanding in the jewellery store robbery.  He is described as male, Black, approximately 6' tall.
