Always Wear Your Helmet

12 Division
If you are going to ride a bike, or anything on wheels for that matter, always wear a helmet.

With summer approaching, the Toronto Helmet Initiative (THI) is reminding young people that helmets protect only those wearing them properly through a new video.

“Know the 2-V-1 rule,” said 12 Division Constable Peter De Quintal, a THI member. “Put the helmet level on the head, not tilting backward or forward. The helmet should cover the top of the head and sit two finger widths above your eyebrows. Adjust the fit of the helmet by adding or repositioning the foam pads. Move the dial or other fitting devices so it fits snug.

“The side straps should meet to form a V below each ear. If your helmet tilts back, tighten the front strap. If you helmet tilts forward, tighten the back straps. Fit no more than one finger between the chin and fastened strap.”

The THI steering committee is made up of representatives from the Hospital for Sick Children, the Toronto District School Board, the Toronto Catholic District School Board and Toronto Public Health, who promote the safe use of helmets and increase the use for all Torontonians — starting with children.

By law, it’s mandatory for every cyclist under 18 to wear a helmet. Helmets have been proven to greatly reduce the risk of brain and head injuries, preventing concussions and potentially even death.

Studies have shown that helmet use reduces head injury risk by over 80%.
