Don't Let Domestic Violence Live in Shadows
Make It Your Business: Report Domestic Violenceis a brief glimpse into the life of someone being abused and the ripple effect that has on families of victims.
“The key to preventing domestic violence is education and awareness,” said Toronto Police Domestic Violence & Child Abuse Coordinator Ann-Marie Tupling. “The PSA will bring awareness to the impact of domestic violence on a victim and the secondary victims, children.”
Each year in Toronto, 4,000 people are charged with Domestic Violence offences, but it is believed that three in four cases go unreported.
“We hope to educated the public on how important it is for them to get involved and contact police,” said Tupling, who encourages anyone who is a victim to report their abuse seek out support and those who know victims of domestic violence to do the same.
Victims and Survivors of Crime Week is being marked from May 27 to June 2, with the theme of Transforming the Culture Together.
The Service will be honouring Crown Attorney Jill Witkin, for her work to help transform the culture of the criminal justice system by creating a better experience for victims and survivors of crime by advocating for them and delivering effective and efficient services. The event takes place at Police Headquarters (at 40 College St.) at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 28.
A one-day conference,Domestic Homicides – The Ripple Effect, is also being held at the Toronto Police College on May 30. The event is at capacity.
“The aim of Victims and Survivors of Crime Week is to raise awareness about the issues facing victims and survivors of crime and about the service, assistance and laws in place to help victims, survivors and their families,” Tupling said. “Victims and Survivors of Crime Week is also a time to acknowledge the work of service providers and their dedication to assisting victims and survivors of crime and their families.”
