Drug Warrants Net $1.1M, Murder Suspect

A suspect wanted in connection with a 2014 homicide in the city was among 11 people arrested by Toronto Police while executing search warrants across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and southern Ontario on December 9.

Launched two months ago, Project Springfield targeted individuals believed to be trafficking in illicit controlled substances in the GTA and surrounding communities.

It is alleged that that the suspects operated a sophisticated trafficking network involving various illicit substances that crossed many jurisdictions.

As a result of search warrants executed in Toronto, Barrie, Markham, Innisfil and Utopia, 11 people were arrested and charged with drug- and firearm-related offences.

At a news conference at police headquarters on December 10, Drug Squad unit commander Inspector Howie Page said the seizures included cocaine, marijuana, MDMA, hashish, oxycodone and a Remington 12-gauge shotgun.

The combined street value of the substances seized is estimated at nearly $1.1 million.

“I would like to point out that a combined total of 90 pounds of marijuana was seized at the various warrants with all of the marijuana packaged and ready for mid- and street-level sales,” said Page. “Approximately three kilos of powder cocaine was seized. Much like the marijuana we seized, the cocaine was also packaged for mid- and street-level sales…The officers also seized a kilo of hashish and MDMA which is known as molly or ecstasy on the street.

“The packaging of these drugs is an important factor of this investigation as these individuals were alleged to be part of a sophisticated network of dealers willing and able to provide illicit drugs to high-end dealers, mid-level dealers as well as the street level.”
