Family Appeals for Help in Fatal Hit and Run
Traffic Services investigators are asking for the public’s help solving the fatal hit and run of Stuart Costigan on Roncesvalles on June 6.
“I am just asking that if anyone witnessed anything to have the courage and moral compass to come forward and share any information,” said Stuart’s brother Richard Costigan. “I don’t think anyone deserves to be left on the side of the road. It is not right and I hope that is not the society we are growing up in and the Toronto that I am bringing up my kids in. The person who did this may have panicked and not know what to do. I hope they have the courage to come forward and help bring closure for my family.”
Costigan acknowledged Toronto Police investigators for their work on the case.
“Knowing they have recovered a vehicle and they are one step closer to finding out what happened and bringing some justice for my brother is appreciated,” he added.
At around 5.15 a.m. on June 6, police received a report that a vehicle struck a pedestrian in the Roncesvalles Ave. and Dundas St. W. area.
Despite emergency medical intervention, Stuart Costigan, 48, succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect was driving a dark coloured Volkswagen GTI that was travelling southbound on Roncesvalles Ave. south of Dundas St. W. when the pedestrian was hit.
The driver fled the scene and the vehicle was last seen going westbound on Howard Park Ave.
At a news conference at Traffic Services on June 19, Detective Aaron Swaine of Traffic Services said investigators located the suspect vehicle.
He also said a person was seen on video footage speaking with the victim prior to the collision.
“Several vehicles were captured on video driving through the area after the collision, but prior to the arrival of emergency services,” said Swaine. “We are urging these individuals to come forward to speak with police as they may have crucial information that could help us with this investigation.”
Police are also asking local residents, businesses and drivers who may have security or dash camera footage of the area or incident to contact investigators.
“The victim’s family is seeking answers and we need help from the public to identify the person who ended Mr. Costigan’s life on June 6,” said Swaine.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 416-808-1900 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS or 1-800 222-tips.
