Gun recovered in Malvern area

On Monday, June 28, at around 1.50 a.m., 42 Division officers received a radio call for young people tossing fireworks at homes and vehicles in the area.

“When the officers got there, they checked nearby parks and identified the area where the fireworks were coming from,” said D/Const. Ashley Dobias of the Division’s Major Crime Unit. “They then located a group of people who attempted to run away.”

Police detained three people.

During the investigation, officers located a bottle of rum and a satchel with a 9 mm handgun.

“It was loaded with 10 rounds in the magazine, but none in the chamber,” Dobias said.

Three people were arrested.

“An adult is facing firearms-related charges and two people were released unconditionally,” added Dobias.

Inspector Gregory Watts praised the officers for taking another gun off city streets.

“This is a great example of the importance of engagement,” he said.

“These officers relied on their training, remained calm and did their job effectively. There is only one reason why someone would carry a dangerous weapon like this and that is to cause harm.That won’t happen because of these officers who chose to engage, do something, and make a difference. All over the city our officers are doing just that, making a difference by going above and beyond.”
