High-risk driving behaviours were the target of Operation Shield.

Ontario Provincial Police and Toronto Police Service Traffic Services and 33 Division officers participated in the two-day enforcement and eduction initiative along Highway 404 and the Don Valley Parkway.Hundreds of thousands of vehicles travel along this highway each day during morning rush hour. Through analytics, we identified this stretch as an area of concern and developed a proactive initiative that reduced crime/traffic incidents along with calls for service through the efficient deployment of resources.

It was the second joint forces Operation Shield, which targeted the Big Four leading causes of death and injury:

  • Impaired driving
  • Aggressive driving
  • Not using restraint/seat belts
  • Distracted driving

There was also the mandate to educate andenforce theHigh-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in advance of the Pan Am Games. There are HOV lanes that will require three or more occupants (up from the regular two occupants) from June 29 to July 27. There will be signs indicating the new lane restrictions.

  • Seatbelt: 9
  • Aggressive Driving: 69
  • Speeding: 14
  • Other Highway Traffic Act: 100
  • Other Provincial Offences Act: 3

Overall numbers:

  • Motorist contacts: 533
  • Focused patrols: 7.5 hours
  • Warnings: 13
  • Vehicle inspections: 1
  • 3-day suspension: 1

Operation Shield saw hard-work, dedication and enthusiasm of every officer who took part. The high level of professionalism, energy and camaraderie of each officer underscored the importance of collaborative partnerships in public safety, and that together, we can make our communities a safer place for everyone, free from crime and traffic issues.
