Paying Respect to Exemplary Officer

The veteran officer was killed in the line of duty on July 2. He was 55.

Northrup and his partner were responding to a 9-1-1 call for a robbery in progress when a vehicle struck them in Toronto City Hall’s underground parking garage.

He succumbed to his injuries.

Starting his Toronto Police Service career with Court Services 31 years ago, Northrup became a uniformed officer in 1999 and was assigned to 11 Division. He was at 52 Division for the last 13 years and a member of the Chief’s Ceremonial Unit.

“Jeff was an exemplary officer,” said Cole, who is the 52 Division Unit Commander. “He served in various units, including our Division’s Major Crime and Primary Response where he was a training officer. In fact, he trained most of the officers on ‘C’ platoon which he just left. He came to work with a smile on his face. He was just someone who led and was a consummate professional.”

Cole said 52 Division members are grieving after the traumatic loss.

“His death has hit the Division very hard and our officers are doing the best they can to do what needs to be done,” he noted. “We have a lot of services in place to help them and we are also taking care of the needs of Jeff’s family which is very important now.”

Northrup is survived by his mother, wife and three children.
