He joined a Newmarket cycle club and has become an avid rider in the past five years, participating the last three years in the Toronto Police Stationary Bike Race in support of United Way Toronto.
In the 18th annual event on October 16 at police headquarters, Henry – a member of the 53 Division “Midtown Magic” team – won the individual male rider award. He rode 10.64 kilometres in his 10-minute allotted time.
“This is a great event for a wonderful cause and I was happy to be part of it,” he said. “It’s a challenge to scout people to ride for 10 minutes and some individuals take it lightly when you tell them it’s 10 minutes. Anyone who has taken part in this event knows how long 10 minutes are.”
Constable Jennifer Wilson of 41 Division “Wheel Warriors” improved on her second-place finish last year.
Her winning time was 8.60 kilometres.
“I am a recreational runner,” she said. “I don’t ride, so you can imagine how much of a challenge this is. For me, it’s 10 minutes of pain, but it’s worth it because the funds raised are going to a great cause.”
This is the fourth year that Wilson, who joined the Service 16 years ago, has participated in the exciting fundraiser.
Her “Wheel Warriors” unit also clinched the winning team prize, travelling a combined 53.29 kilometres.
The Toronto Police Association “The Young & the Rest of Us” team and 13 Division’s “League of Justice” were second and third respectively with 50.2 and 49.26 kilometres.
Video Services “Technical Difficulties” team copped the Best Team Name prize while 12 Division’s “Dozens Dead” won the Best Costume Award and was the top fundraiser with $1,260.
A total of 17 teams raised $12,000.
