Rovers Ready For Service To Community
The second largest Rover Crew investiture ceremony took place recently at Toronto Police College.
A total of 70 first-yearRoverswere presented with their Scouts Canada neckers at the investiture ceremony. Toronto Police collaborate with Scouts Canada and Humber College in the unique program that allows participants to provide community service at police and community events such as the Santa Claus and St. Patrick’s Day parades and blood drives.
They also assist as ushers at officers’ funerals and Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (PREP) practice sessions
Superintendent Shaun Narine, the 22 Division unit commander, and Superintendent Peter Lennox who is in charge at the Toronto Police College, attended the ceremony.
“The traditional elements of the scouting program are still emphasized through camping trips, knots tying and lashing, learning how to set up a tent and use a map and compass and respect for each other and the environment,” said Lennox. “They are also taught communication and basic dispatch skills along with the importance of working with other first responder agencies.”
Nearly 45 Rovers have joined the Toronto Police Service working in uniform and civilian roles since the program started in 2003. They are employed throughout the Service in court services, parking enforcement and other areas.
“The goal of the program is to introduce young people to a career in policing while helping develop them into well rounded individuals who are better prepared for success,” said Narine.
Rovers have performed almost 1,800 community hours so far this year.
