Summer Job with Police Opens Doors
Being part of the Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI), four years ago, reinforced his desire to pursue a law enforcement career.
“To be selected from hundreds of applicants was quite an honour,” said Araujo, who was assigned to Forensic Identification Services (FIS). “That was the first good thing that happened. Then I got the opportunity to work in a professional environment with police officers and civilian members of the Service who were quite helpful and accessible.”
Last summer, the Service contracted Araujo to assist with the coordination of the YIPI program. The contract was recently extended.
“The program opened doors for me,” said the YIPI assistant. “I would not be in this position right now if I was not exposed to the summer initiative in 2010.”
Students can apply online until February 7 by visiting tps.on.ca/careers and clicking 'Civilian Careers' and then 'Apply Now.'
“The application process started on January 13 and the response so far has been overwhelming,” said Araujo. “The interest in this program is very high. We have just 150 available spots and it’s already evident that the applications we receive could be almost eight times that amount.”
Students will be interviewed during March break.
This summer’s program runs from June 30 to August 22 and the hourly rate of pay is $10.90.
To be eligible, applicants must be a student between 15 and 18, as of June 30, 2014, be successful through the employment security clearance process, be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident, be legally eligible to work in Canada, be in school and not have previously participated in the YIPI program.
Applicants must permanently reside in the Malvern, Jane-Finch, Jamestown, Regent Park, Dorset Park, Steeles-L’Amoreaux, Weston-Mt. Dennis, Lawrence Heights, Flemingdon Park-Victoria Village, Crescent Town, Eglinton East-Kennedy Park, Scarborough Village, Kingston-Galloway, South Parkdale or Westminster-Branson communities.
YIPI students are exposed to the Service’s 17 Divisions and 48 support units during the six-week program.
Participants gain valuable work experience and feel positive and confident about their experiences, which they take back to their communities. In addition, the young people recognize, develop and pursue some of the career aspirations that attracted them to the program, initially, and the program facilitates positive and sustained personal relationships between the youth and members of the Toronto Police Service.
