Two Handguns From Vehicle Stop

12 Division
A pair of officers uncovered two concealed handguns after stopping a car that blew a red light.

On August 6, just after 1 a.m., officers saw a car fail to stop at a red light. They pulled over the vehicle with three men inside.

Const. Bryan Irwin observed a grinder that one of the passengers voluntarily opened with marijuana inside and what he believed to be a firearm butt-end under the passenger seat.

The officers also noticed that the passenger in the back seat was wearing a balaclava on top of his head.

After the officers asked the occupants to step out of the vehicle, Irwin observed a firearm inside the vehicle and alerted his partner, Const. Imran Mandozai.

One of the occupants was arrested at the scene while another, who fled on foot, was also apprehended.

The driver of the vehicle left the scene on foot and remains outstanding.

It’s alleged that two Glock model handguns and ammunition were found in the vehicle.

Supt. Ron Taverner, said the 12 Division officers deserve accolades for their keen observations during the traffic stop.

“To take handguns off the streets not only makes them a little safer, but results in charges of those who are alleged to be in unlawful possession of firearms,” said Taverner. “The number of illegal weapons on the streets makes the good citizens of the city outraged. I want to acknowledge the excellent work and observation by the 12 Division officers.”

Ramone Thomas, 22, of Toronto, faces eight charges, including two counts of unauthorized possession of a prohibited restricted weapon.

Osman Aim, 18, of Toronto, faces seven charges.

They appeared in court on August 6 via video link.

Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a third suspect, Biniam Habtamu, 24, of Toronto.

He’s considered armed and dangerous.
