Video Witness to Murder
On September 14, at around 2.50 a.m., Anthony Soares was ambushed just after being dropped off by a friend at 6 Glamorgan Ave. in the Kennedy Rd. & 401 area.
As he was buzzing to get into the high-rise apartment, two men jumped out of a heavily tinted four-door white Ford Fusion and started shooting at Soares, who was trapped between the inner foyer and the offenders on the opposite side of the glass.
“At that point, the vehicle that drove the deceased to the scene leaves the area for the driver’s safety,” said Detective Sergeant Gary Giroux, at a news conference at police headquarters on September 19.
As the victim fell to the floor, the suspects continued to shoot at him.
“At one point, one of the suspects, wearing a burgundy hoodie, touches the metal frame of the lobby door in an attempt to hold it open,” said Giroux. “Realizing he had touched it, he pulls his hand up his sleeve and wipes what he believes are his fingerprints on the door frame. After that, he begins to fire again at the victim while he is lying on the floor.”
Giroux said both suspects had semi-automatic weapons.
“The video shows both of the weapons lock in an open position and that indicates they were empty,” he added.
After the shooting, the suspects ran back to the vehicle they came in, which headed at a high rate of speed north on Kennedy Rd. towards the 401.
Soares, 33, was taken to hospital where he succumbed after undergoing surgical procedures.
Giroux said the friend who dropped off Soares returned to the scene, called police, and is co-operating with the investigation.
He also confirmed that the deceased was known to Drake, the Canadian rapper.
“Many of the family members have met Drake and I certainly would encourage him, through his tweets, to encourage anybody within the community to come forward with regards to any information they may have that might assist in solving his friend’s murder,” said Giroux.
