We Walk As One For Autism

On Saturday, June 4, 2017, Service members will walk in support of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). According to Autism Speaks Canada, 1 in 68 children is currently diagnosed with ASD.

Across the Service, different Divisions have held fundraising events, from a BBQ at Parking Enforcement East to a silent auction and pizza lunch at police headquarters, as well as several McDonald’s restaurants donating a portion of sales on May 26.

Since 2007, Autism Speaks has raised over $10 million dollars due to generous donations and sponsors.

Last year, we witnessed Staff Sergeant Peter Troup’s autistic daughter, Carly, who was pleading to sing the national anthems at a Blue Jays game. Her dream became true due to a hashtag (#letcarlysing). The walk also included Chief Mark Saunders talking to the public about his so, Graham, who is also on the Autism spectrum. We are making huge strides educating people about Autism and how those who live with it are no better or worse than someone without the disorder.

On the Saturday of the walk, there will be hundreds of members from the public who lace up their shoes and take part in the three-kilometre trek. Volunteers will hold signs with facts about Autism, and cold drinks and as well as snacks will be handed out as walkers cross the finish line. Whether a walker has Autism or is just looking to support the cause, the walk will raise awareness and education for the public. For those walking, it shows solidarity and friendship for a family with a loved one with ASD. This walk holds a special place in my heart. I walk for those who have been there for me through thick and thin. I was going through the hardest days of my life and, if it wasn’t for my family, doctors, and friends, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I joined the Service in November 2015 and I haven’t let Autism stop me from doing my job. Some days are better than others, but the Service members I work with are very understanding and accept me for who I am

It will be the second year I’m participating in the walk and I will be joined by my parents and sister.

On June 4, 2017, we will walk as one, all for giving back to those who have ASD or are on the spectrum. Staff Sergeant Troup will walk for Carly, Chief Saunders will walk for Graham and other Service members will join in to give back to those in their community.
