Toronto Police Service Board Renews Chief Myron Demkiw’s Contract for Four Years

Unit:

The Toronto Police Service Board today announced the renewal of Chief Myron Demkiw’s contract for a further four years, ensuring stability and continuity in leadership at the Toronto Police Service.

“Stability in leadership is critical at this moment,” said Councillor Shelley Carroll, Chair of the Toronto Police Service Board. “The Board is confident that Chief Demkiw is the right person to guide the Service through the challenges ahead. His steady leadership, commitment to accountability, and dedication to modernization have earned the trust of both the Service and the communities we serve.”

The renewal reflects the Board’s recognition of Chief Demkiw’s capacity to balance continuity with meaningful progress.

“Continuity in leadership does not mean standing still; it creates the space where meaningful change can take root,” said Carroll. “Chief Demkiw has shown his ability to adapt and evolve the Service while maintaining steadiness at the helm. That balance is precisely what Toronto needs in its Chief of Police at this time.”

Chair Carroll noted that the decision builds on other recent milestones achieved by the Toronto Police Service Board and the Toronto Police Service, including the adoption of the Multi-Year Hiring Plan in November 2024 and the successful negotiation of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement with the Toronto Police Association earlier this year. Together, these steps strengthen the Service’s foundation as it moves forward.

“With this renewal, the Board is affirming its confidence in the Chief’s vision, his ability to steer the Service through complex challenges, and his capacity to carry it forward into a future where policing in Toronto is not only strong and stable, but ever more responsive to the city it serves,” said Carroll.

“I want to thank the Chair and the Board for their confidence and support, and I want to thank our members who inspire me every day,” said Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw. “I look forward to the next four years as we continue our efforts to improve trust, accelerate police reform and professionalization, and support safer communities. I am excited to continue working with our members, the Board, our communities, and all our partners to keep our city safe and deliver meaningful results.”
