Toronto Police Service Increasing Traffic Enforcement to Reduce Congestion
Today, the Toronto Police Service’s Parking Enforcement and Traffic Services Units are launching a three-month enforcement campaign to help reduce traffic congestion and keep roads moving.
Starting on October 20, Toronto Police Parking Enforcement and Traffic Services officers will be increasing enforcement of Highway Traffic Act and City of Toronto bylaw offences in the downtown core. This enforcement will target the most congestion-causing violations, including no stopping, no parking, and blocking the box offences. In addition, officers will focus on traffic safety enforcement, with an emphasis on prohibited turns, speeding, distracted driving, and traffic signal violations.
This increased enforcement will take place from Bloor Street to Front Street, and Bathurst Street to Jarvis Street between 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Officers will lay tickets where needed and vehicles can be towed if necessary. If a driver chooses not to obey any of these laws, they can face tickets costing up to $615.
This initiative is an intensification of TPS’ existing rush hour enforcement operations and is aimed at reminding drivers about the importance of obeying traffic signage and laws to help keep traffic moving, especially during the busiest times of the day.
The campaign’s results will be reviewed at the end of the three-month period to assess its impact and determine next steps.
Spokespersons from the Traffic Services and Parking Enforcement units are available to speak to media upon request.
