A tip from a passerby led to an arrest and recovery of a handgun in 55 Division.

“We are very grateful that a member of the community provided this critical information, which led to the arrest of this young person and the seizure of a loaded firearm,” said Inspector Michael Hayles. “There are many ways the community can provide public safety information to us. No tip is insignificant. Public safety is a shared responsibility and we rely on collaboration to get the job done”

After 1 a.m. on July 17, a person called 9-1-1 to report they observed a male pull out a firearm within a group of people.

Officers arrived on the scene and located a male matching the description at Mcdonald's at Pape & Cosburn Aves.

He didn’t have a weapon at the time.

After reviewing video surveillance, they observed the accused discarding a satchel in nearby bushes.

The satchel contained a loaded firearm.

The 9mm handgun had nine rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber.

A 17-year-old youth is facing five charges, including possession of a loaded firearm and breach of probation.

The officers who made the arrest, Constable Yusuf Nur and Raiyd Azam, have less than a year on the job.

“I attended the graduation of PC Nur and PC Azam just a short time ago,” Hayles said. “From day one, they have received high praise for their commitment to their colleagues and the community.”
