Giving Students Support for School
High school graduates in 41 Division were awarded bursaries to assist their pursuit of higher education.
The presentation ceremony took place on July 4 at the Arrow Group of Companies headquarters at Eglinton Ave. E. and Birchmount Rd.
Ten students each received $1,000.
“This monetary assistance will assist these young people as they prepare to embark on the next chapter of their life,” said 41 Division Unit Commander Superintendent Warren Wilson.
St. Joan of Arc Catholic Academy graduates Benjamin Paul and Mayumi Ejada said the bursaries will help as they make the transition from high school to college and university.
“University is very expensive, so this is certainly a big help,” said Paul, who is pursuing Humanities Studies at the University of Toronto.
He aspires to pursue law or politics.
Ejada will study Biotechnology at Centennial College.
“This is motivation to keep me going,” she said, of having support from her community.
Coming to Canada from Bangladesh two years ago, Arundyuti Roy said she is grateful for the bursary.
“It tells me that my hard work is paying off and I am so grateful that my Guidance Counsellor nominated me for this,” said the Scarborough Centre for Alternative Studies graduate who enters York University in September to study Applied Mathematics.
The other recipients were Ruba Abd, Kofi Adjei, Jacklin Aliko, Adonya Berhanu, Ismail Ishfak, Jolin Li and Whitney Owie.
The 41 Division Community Policing Liaison Committee (CPLC) raised the funds for the scholarships.
Several area businesses, including the Arrow Group of Companies (AGC), contributed to the scholarship program.
“I grew up in this neighbourhood and these opportunities were not available to us,” said AGC President Sam Ibrahim. “Doing this also assists in normalizing kids’ relationships with police. When I was young, we didn’t always look at cops in a good way.”
Wilson and Holly de Jong co-chair the 41 Division CPLC.
“We have students in our community who are doing well in and out of the classroom and deserve some recognition,” de Jong said.
