Storytime with the Chief
In celebration of Museum Month, Chief Myron Demkiw took time to read to students and share his own story at an event at the Toronto Police Museum & Discovery Centre.
“It is a privilege and honour to be Chief of Police and these are moments that remind me of who we all serve and the importance of us building connections in our community and good relationships because this is our future,” said Demkiw of meeting with students from St. Paul Catholic Elementary School and reading A Day at the Police Station by Richard Scarry. “Having a relationship with our future leaders is incredibly essential for our continued success.”
The 8 to 10-year-old students had the chance to ask the Chief a few questions, including why he decided to become a police officer and what the most challenging and rewarding aspects of his job are. They also had a chance to pass around his badge.
Chief Demkiw said he still vividly remembers the police officer who visited his middle school in the west end of the city where he grew up.
“His coming to our school was significant for me and my classmates,” he said.

Grades 3 and 4 teacher Antonia Navarrete said it’s great chance for kids to have a positive meeting with police officers that they see in their neighbourhoods.
“This a good opportunity for them to put a face to the person who heads Toronto Police Service,” she said.
The students later toured the Service’s Museum & Discovery Centre that collects, preserves, interprets and showcase objects and documents of historic significance to the Service in order to cultivate relationships with communities across the city and Greater Toronto Area.
“Having these students come out to our facility offers a unique opportunity to strengthen bonds and enhance public trust,” said Museum Curator Kamila Kalita. “It humanizes law enforcement by presenting the Chief and officers in a relatable and approachable manner. This humanization breaks down barriers and fosters positive perceptions among children and families.”
The Toronto Police Museum and Discovery Centre is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and offers free tours. To learn more, visit www.tps.ca/museum or e-mail [email protected].
