The Information Access unit processes requests from both community members and/or their legal representatives (including insurance companies and the media). These requests are for information created by the Toronto Police Service and subject to disclosure pursuant to MFIPPA. Information Access is comprised of the following subsections:

Access & Privacy: Members in this subsection are responsible for coordinating the Toronto Police Service’s regulatory requirements with respect to the dissemination of records, documents, reports, etc., in accordance with MFIPPA
- Records Release: Members in this subsection are responsible for retrieving and disclosing Toronto Police Service records as required/requested by the public (e.g. Police Reference Check Program requests, Insurance company response letters, urgent requests for information related to domestic violence, etc.)
- Criminal Records: Members in this subsection maintain criminal record files, ensure the accuracy of police records and respond to routine inquiries from Toronto Police Service members and external law enforcement agencies on issues related to criminal records. This subsection is also responsible for requests/appeals for fingerprint and photograph destruction
Background Checks
A Background Check is a document issued by the Toronto Police Service and produced on secured paper. A Background Check consists of a Criminal Record Check/Clearance Letter, which indicates the applicant has no criminal convictions in the Nation Repository of Criminal Records, and a Vulnerable Sector Screening which is intended for individuals seeking employment or volunteer opportunities with vulnerable persons.
Criminal Record Check/Clearance Letter
A Criminal Record Check/Clearance Letter is a document that illustrates an applicant has no criminal convictions or findings of guilt in the National Repository of Criminal Records maintained by the RCMP.

Checks for applicants seeking employment or volunteering with organizations that require a criminal records check, along with a search of outstanding entries and charges.

A Vulnerable Sector Screening is intended for those who are seeking employment or volunteer opportunities with vulnerable persons. A Vulnerable Sector Screening provides a summary of criminal convictions, outstanding charges or warrants, or any pardoned offences.

The Toronto Police Services processes requests under the Municipal Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act. Under the Act, individuals may request access to general records as well as records containing their own personal information. Individuals also have the right to request a correction of their personal information, which they believe to be false or inaccurate, and/or to attach a statement of disagreement to their records.

Requests for information held by the Toronto Police Service are made through the Access Privacy Section, which is responsible for managing compliance with M.F.I.P.P.A. and other statutes.
