A TPS member death where injury or trauma, sustained during the course of their policing duties, was determined to be a significant contributing factor.
The Toronto Police Service recognizes the impact and prevalence of operational stress injuries because of the nature of police work, exposing our members to traumatic events, high-stress situations or long-term operational fatigue that can result in life-altering damage and death by suicide.
The Service prioritizes the de-stigmatization, prevention and intervention surrounding mental health with the goal to to support all members, their families and loved ones when they need it the most. There are peer support programs, mental health check-ups, time off following stressful events, and training to help our members identify the warning signs of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder and give them tools to help.
If you need help, or know someone who does, remember you are not alone.
Please reach out to a friend, family member colleague or the mental health supports available through your policing organization or externally.
The Toronto Police Wellness Unit can be reached at 416-808-7171.
