Police Constable Samuel Henry MacGowan

Samuel Henry MacGowan, Police Constable #274 of No. 1 Police Station (in the Church St and King St E area), was a single young man who lived at 733 Markham Street with his brother Hugh.

On February 16th 1916, Constable MacGowan enlisted with Toronto’s 180th Battalion (Sportsmen), CEF, and in November 1916, sailed to England on the SS Olympic. In February 1917, MacGowan landed in France and transferred to the 75th Battalion (Mississauga), CEF, as a replacement, proceeding to the front. On Easter Monday, April 9th 1917, MacGowan was killed in action at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Constable Samuel Henry MacGowan lies buried at Canadian Cemetery No. 2, Neuville-St. Vaast, France.
