Nearly 80 young people took part in the annual Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association Playground Games on July 22 at Eastview Community Centre.

“We have been doing this for years in underserved communities to keep the kids engaged in sports,” said TPAAA General Manager Chris Scherk. “They are involved in six sports disciplines today, ranging from basketball and soccer to lacrosse and cricket.”

The TPAAA, which promotes fitness and camraderie among TPS members through sport, has been hosting the Playground Games for 75 years.

The young people also had the chance to meet officers from Police Dog Services, the Mounted Unit and the Emergency Task Force.

Laurette Jack, the Boys & Girls Club program coordinator, said the kids, aged five to 13, are part of the Eastview summer and leadership programs.

“They are excited to be part of this program,” said Jack, of the day that included being piped into an opening ceremony. “I love a good partnership, and I think it is essential to view the police in a different light. It is fun that they can engage this way.”
