Toronto Police Service Enhances Enforcement for ‘Block the Box’ Violations
The Toronto Police Service is notifying the public about new enforcement measures for motorists who block intersections – commonly known as ‘Blocking the Box.’ Such actions disrupt traffic flow, contribute to congestion, and create unsafe conditions for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.

Following the City of Toronto's recent increase in fines, penalties for drivers who block intersections have increased from $90 to $450 at most intersections and from $120 to $500 in designated community safety zones.
The Toronto Police Service is responsible for the education and enforcement of Blocking the Box, including issuing fines.
“When you block the box, you’re creating an unsafe environment on the road for everyone – motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians – while also adding to congestion and gridlock,” said Deputy Chief Lauren Pogue. “Our officers, in collaboration with the City of Toronto, will emphasize education and enforcement of these infractions to ensure safer and smoother transit for all road users.”
Officers from the Traffic Service Motor Squad will target peak traffic hours, focusing on major intersections citywide.
To minimize disruptions during enforcement, officers will use body-worn cameras to capture infractions, and then guide drivers to nearby parking areas or side streets to issue tickets, reducing the impact on traffic flow while holding motorists accountable.
