The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is proud to announce its achievement of the Canada Awards for Excellence (CAE) Gold certification in Mental Health at Work®. TPS is the first and only municipal police service in Canada to achieve the Gold Award from Excellence Canada. This prestigious award recognizes TPS's exceptional commitment to fostering a supportive and healthy workplace.

"This certification recognizes our work to address the mental health and well-being of our members,” said Chief of Police Myron Demkiw. “The nature of our work is inherently stressful, and it is crucial that we help our members be at their best so they can thrive and continue to serve the people of Toronto with excellence.”

This achievement underscores TPS's strengths in leadership commitment, dedicated mental health support, leading return-to-work processes, strong communication efforts, and cultural transformation. It highlights the Service's dedication to creating a supportive and healthy workplace for all members.

"Our commitment to our members' well-being is paramount, ensuring every member feels valued and supported,” added Svina Dhaliwal, Chief Administrative Officer. “We strive to create an environment where our members can thrive and perform at their highest potential.”

TPS's success in achieving the CAE Gold certification is the result of a collective effort across the entire Service. Comprehensive mental health programs, dedicated support teams, and a strong communication framework have been implemented to ensure members have access to the resources they need. This award reflects TPS's commitment to continual improvement and supporting the well-being of its members.

“While celebrating this significant milestone, we acknowledge that there is still much work to be done,” continued CAO Dhaliwal. “TPS remains committed to increasing trust, improving access to mental health support and building greater strategic linkages to organizational wellbeing. We are committed to building on this success and work towards achieving even higher standards of excellence in mental health and well-being."

Canada Awards for Excellence recognizes outstanding achievements by municipalities and organizations across Canada. Excellence Canada rigorously evaluated TPS on four key drivers: Leadership and Commitment, Planning and Risk Management, Implementation and Evaluation, as well as People and Processes.
