Air Support Takes Risk Out of Arrests
A new Toronto Police Service Air Support Unit allows police helicopters to work in coordination with ground units to create a safer and more effective way to make arrests.
While on general patrol, Air Support Unit Constable Robert Rinkoff spotted two vehicles racing through highway traffic.
“There were two vehicles driving in the emergency lane, braking suddenly and tailgating other cars,” said Rinkoff. “I knew we had a helicopter in the air, so I called it in to let them know what was going on.”
The helicopter quickly located the two vehicles and followed them to a school, where officers from 41 Division and the Public Safety Response Unit carried out the takedown.
“From a public safety perspective, we are not pursuing, but following, and in some instances the suspects don’t even know we are there,” said Constable Dave Donaldson, who was the officer in the air communicating with ground units. “So they are not speeding away or making dangerous decisions. They may calm down a little and drive more safely because they don’t want to draw attention to themselves. The helicopter helps ensure there are no accidents between officers, other vehicles, or the suspects. Everyone goes home safely, including the suspects.”
Four people were taken into custody without incident, and two were arrested.
“The Air Support Unit and what we are doing with the helicopter is taking the risk out,” said Donaldson. “I am speaking directly to the officers and providing the most timely and accurate information I can. I want to paint that picture for them so they can do their job as safely as possible.”
