Constable Harpal Singh met Zofia Pawlik last year while responding to radio call after she lost her purse.

“Once we started talking, she told me her husband had passed away two years ago, she was a nurse and knew multiple languages,” said Singh. “One of the reasons I joined policing is to help other people out. I felt Zofia was a little bit down and asked if she was open to activities at a community centre so I could help her out.”

Pawlik agreed and was connected to 31 Division Community Relations Officer Melody Carroll, who knew just the program to help the 75-year-old Pawlik.

The Italian Women’s Fitness Group meet three times weekly and exercise for about 45 minutes at Grandravine Community Centre.

“They then socialize and celebrate events like Christmas and Valentine’s,” said Carroll, whose work connects her to many of the great programs, services and people making a difference in the north west end of the city. “Many of them are widowed. It is a very tight and caring group and they take very good care of each other.”

Since joining the group in the Fall, Pawlik says she’s feeling better than ever.

“I am 75 and I was in a lot of arthritic pain then. Now, I am pain free. The exercises are therapeutic and it is good for your health. I like what we are doing and love the police officers for their help.”

Ameris Cristofoli started the group decades ago.

“We had about six or seven women who just came out for fun,” she said. “The group has now expanded to about 60. We strive to keep the ladies in good shape and health.  The main thing is to get them moving.”
