Police officers found a firearm at an unlikely call – a traffic collision.

On January 20 around 4.a.m., police responded to a single vehicle collision on the Don Valley Parkway at Eglinton Ave. E.

Traffic Services officers were first on scene and found three people sitting in the heavily damaged vehicle that came to rest in a ditch.

“Three occupants were in the vehicle and it was clear that alcohol was likely involved. Additional resources were requested and 33 Division officers quickly attended to assist,” said Inspector Michael Hayles, of 55 Division.

As police assisted the driver to get out of the vehicle, they noticed a gun on the vehicle floor. They seized a 9mm Glock handgun.

“This is another example of how hard our frontline uniform members are working to increase community safety,” he said.

Officers from 55 Division took over the investigation and laid charges.

Three men are facing several charges including impaired operation, occupying motor vehicle with firearm, failing to comply with release order, possession of a firearm.

Toronto officers seized 11 firearms from January 21 to January 27, laying 131 charges against 20 people. There were seven youth among those arrested and nine were on at least one bail condition.
