A suspect, ranked number seventeen on Bolo’s Top 25 Canada Most Wanted List, has been captured in the United States.

Kamar Cunningham, 43, was arrested by United States Marshals in the Atlanta, Georgia region on May 7.

He is being held pending extradition.

“This is yet another great example of how the Toronto Police Service is relentless in seeking fugitives trying to evade us,” said Superintendent Paul MacIntyre who is the Organized Crime Enforcement Unit Commander.  “Nowhere is safe to hide.  If you’re not within the Toronto boundaries, we’ll work closely with other Services and agencies across the world to capture you and return you to Toronto.  We have an excellent relationship with the United States Marshals Service which really extends our reach anywhere into the USA.”

Detective Sergeant Andrew Steinwall, who is in charge of the Fugitive Squad, said Cunningham’s arrest has a direct impact on public safety and the shootings that continue to plague the city.

“His arrest also highlights the collaborative efforts of officers from the Toronto Police Service, the US Marshals Service and the Bolo Program,” he added. “Together, we found a way to make his world smaller until there was nowhere left to hide.”

In March 2024, the Bolo Program offered a cash reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to his arrest. The reward was available until December 4, 2024.

Cunningham was wanted for firearms trafficking and possession of prohibited or restricted firearms.

He was arrested as part of Project Patton in June 2018 for his role in a criminal organization trafficking firearms over the United States border.

At that time, Project Patton resulted in the most significant drug seizure and the single largest seizure of guns in Toronto’s history.

Police conducted search warrants, leading to 75 arrests and the laying of more than 1,000 drugs, firearms and gang-related charges.

Cunningham violated his bail release conditions on three occasions before being arrested and released on bail again.

Found guilty on November 27, 2020, he failed to appear in court in May 2021 for sentencing. In absentia, he was sentenced to nine years in custody.

A Canada-wide warrant for his arrest was issued on May 4, 2021.

Cunningham’s case was the first non-homicide Bolo featured in Toronto.

BOLO – Be On The Look Out – is a term that is commonly used in movies and television shows and also within the law enforcement community.

Launched in 2018, the Bolo program is an initiative leveraging social media and technology to make sure citizens are on the lookout for Canada’s most wanted so they can report sightings and submit tips to help the police arrest these wanted people.
