A man convicted of trafficking an illegal substance and placed on a 10-year weapons prohibition in 2021 was arrested on June 14 and charged with gun and drug possession.

While on patrol in the area of Gerrard and Sherbourne Sts., officers observed the accused on an electric scooter deemed unsafe and illegal to ride in the city.

When they stopped him and queried his name, they realized he had been arrested on June 9 for assault with a weapon.

They also observed that he was wearing two satchels along with a backpack. Asked if he was carrying a weapon, he said he was not. When they patted him down and felt something hard, the accused sped off on the scooter, engaging the officers in a pursuit.

During the chase, he abandoned the satchel that was later recovered with a gun inside, and the electric scooter.

After making the arrest, they located a large quantity of cash in his right pocket, baggies with illegal drugs and a knife.

A total of $3,171.25 in cash was recovered.

“This is an excellent example of the great work all our officers are doing, especially in 51 Division,” said Inspector Errol Watson. “Our officers continue to enhance public safety through their efforts and should be commended for their hard work, dedication and attention to detail.  It was a great effort by all involved.”

The accused is facing nine charges, including possession of illegal drugs and a loaded firearm.
