Helping Journey to Recovery from Hurricane
Hurricane Beryl devastated several Caribbean islands, including St. Vincent & the Grenadines in early July.
Retired York Regional Police Officer Tony Browne spearheaded the organization of a donation drive with support from Toronto Police Constables Curtis Celestine, of the Community Partnerships & Engagement Unit (CPEU), and Mustafa Popalzai, of 51 Division.
Other Toronto Police members and the Emergency Management & Public Order Unit also lent a hand to the initiative.
“Homes, churches, schools, hospitals were severely damaged and efforts to provide relief and rescue were compounded by bad weather, road blockages, power outages and treacherous conditions,” Browne said. “Despite these overwhelming challenges, the resilient spirit of the communities has shone through as they continue their journey to recovery.”
The donations included chainsaws, over 1,600 pieces of clothing, educational materials, backpacks, shoes, food items and hygiene products. The total value is nearly $40,000.
A member of the Toronto Police Community Cricket Club, Browne thanked Toronto Police Service for their support.
“They showed incredible dedication to this relief initiative,” he said, noting the hard work and commitment by Constables Celestine and Popalzai.
Community partners also played a key role in providing support for the initiative.
They include Brands for Canada, the Period Purse, Franchise Athletics and Cari-On Disaster Preparedness.
