Kids Get Chance to Ride Indy Track
Nearly 200 high school students in 15 Toronto Police Service Divisions across the city took part in this year’s Ride the Track on the Toronto Indy Circuit on July 19.
For one day only, the track opens to families, friends, and riders of all ages to enjoy this iconic experience together.
This was the second year that the Children’s Breakfast Club organized the event.
“Last year, we had 100 students and they had a great time, riding with police officers,” said Children’s Breakfast Club Executive Director Zubeda Nanji. “We asked for donations and received about $20,000. This year, we asked families and friends who wanted to attend the event to register and make a donation of $25.”
Proceeds will support the Children’s Breakfast Clubs, funding hot nutritious meals for youths across the GTA.
Currently, the club serves over 6,000 meals per week in more than 39 communities across Southern Ontario. It also provides children with emotional support.
“This is more than a ride,” Nanji added. “It is a movement. Every child deserves a nutritious meal to start their day.”
The Children’s Breakfast Club donated the unassembled bikes.
On June 21, 10 students in 33 Division built their bikes with support from Mountain Equipment staff.
“We had about four stations out there and the young people worked with our Neighbourhood Community officers and Mountain Equipment staff to assemble the bikes,” said Staff Sergeant Shawn Gilbert. “It took about five hours to get the job done, and they are excited to ride on the same track that the Indy race is on.”
The students get to keep the bikes and other riding equipment.
