Service members braved the cold to help fund the dreams of Special Olympics athletes.

The 2025 Toronto Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics Ontario has raised over $71,000 and counting as donations are still being accepted until April 4.

“This is fantastic event,” said Parking Enforcement Officer Kirsten Edgerton, of people collecting donations to jump in a freezing cold pool at the Toronto Zoo. “Helping Special Olympics Ontario something that a lot of people are passionate about.”

Since 1987, the Toronto Police Service has proudly supported Special Olympics athletes when it hosted Canada’s first Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ontario and has continued to expand fundraising efforts so that people with intellectual disabiliites can compete in sports.

Acting Superintendent Matt Moyer said the plunge recognizes the importance of Special Olympics programs.

“It’s a great way to say we support you and stand with you,” Moyer said.

Special Olympics Athlete Lisa said sports is a huge positive in her life.

“You’re meeting friends, competing and going to different places I’ve never been before,” she said.
