Still recovering from a horrific traffic collision just over two years ago, Constable Hassan Chaudhry was elated to receive his badge alongside 90 new police constables on February 20, having never given up on his goal to be a police officer.

“It is a good feeling even though I am a bit nervous,” he said. “It took a quite a while for this to happen because of the setback, but I am relieved and happy.”

Chaudhry was initially set to graduate on February 16, 2023.

However, on his way to training at the Toronto Police College on December 30, 2022, he was severely injured in a wrong way three-vehicle crash on Highway 401 involving an impaired driver that left one person dead.

Chaudhry spent almost five months in hospital recovering from a broken leg, arm, hip and other injuries. He still wanted to become a police officer and set about his recovery and eventual return to training.

He returned to work in November 2023, joining 42 Division’s Criminal Investigative Support Unit. In that role, he answered phones and took reports from members of the public.

“It was nice to be back with Toronto Police,” he said. “They supported me from the time I was injured and I am so grateful for everything they have done to make me feel comfortable and welcomed.”

Shortly after the horrific accident, Chief Myron Demkiw visited the College to console the recruit’s classmates.

“As a police family, we take care of one another and we celebrate each other’s resilience,” Demkiw said at the graduation. “Today, we get to welcome him. He is someone who never gave up and someone who is finally getting his badge after an extremely difficult ordeal.”

Chaudhry, who went to school for Finance and Accounting before turning to law enforcement, is staying at 42 Division where, like all new police constables, he will be matched with a coach officer in his initial months on the job.

“Through determination, perseverance and unwavering support from his loved ones, friends and our family here at 42 Division, Constable Chaudhry is able to fulfil his calling to serve and protect our communities,” said Inspector Richard Harris. “I speak on behalf of all the members and management team at 42 Division in saying we are extremely grateful he will be joining the frontlines here in the coming days.”
