Toronto Police climbers reach new heights together

Sergeant Tom Comeau has turned his passion for mountaineering into a way of supporting first responders and their families.

Over the last five years, the Community Partnerships & Engagement Unit member has raised more than $20,000 for Canada Beyond the Blue and Veterans and Everyday Heroes.

Comeau recently combined that commitment with another test of endurance, organizing and leading a six-day mountain trek involving seven other Toronto Police members.

The expedition challenged the climbers physically and mentally while strengthening the teamwork and determination needed to reach the summit together.

“Everybody did a great job and reached the summit,” Comeau said. “A couple of people became sick along the way, but they persevered and completed the climb.”

Joining him were Mike Wecker, Scharnil Pais, Michelle Campbell, Airnee Eyden, Jenn Minchin, Julian Bute and Jason Maunder.

An experienced mountaineer, Comeau has previously led Service members on two climbs of Mount Kilimanjaro and a trek to Everest Base Camp.

The latest climb also served as preparation for a significantly more demanding expedition. Comeau leaves for Nepal on August 28 to attempt to summit an 8,000-metre peak.

“It should be exciting,” he said. “I’m a little nervous because it’s a major challenge, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Comeau has also used his writing to raise awareness of the challenges confronting first responders. Proceeds from his latest book, which addresses post-traumatic stress disorder, support Canada Beyond the Blue.
