Toronto Police Service Storyteller Honoured with Terry James Trailblazer Award
Ron Fanfair is usually behind the byline, but this time the spotlight was on him.
A 16-year member of the Service, Ron is the author behind many of the stories you read about the Service. It’s an incredible tribute to have one of our own recognized with such a prestigious honour, awarded yearly during Black History Month.
The Terry James Trailblazer Award, celebrates individuals who have made meaningful impacts within the Black community through leadership, creativity, and dedication.
“Ron Fanfair is a fantastic photographer, journalist, writer, and storyteller,” said Toronto Police Superintendent Anthony Paoletta. “His subtle and gentle approach is always reassuring. When I see Ron covering an event, I know he will do it justice and tell a story that is both meaningful and powerful.”
Ron’s contributions are especially significant at a time when transparency and connection with the public are increasingly important.
“He is the Toronto Police Service storyteller,” Supt. Paoletta added. “That role is incredibly significant. It truly matters to have someone who can tell stories the way Ron does.”
Accepting the award, Ron spoke with humility, acknowledging the colleagues and mentors who helped shape his career, and thanking his wife and family for their continued support.
“It’s nice to be recognized, but I don’t consider myself a trailblazer,” Ron said. “I stand on the shoulders of others. They’re the real trailblazers.”
He also expressed appreciation to those who attended the ceremony.
“For people to come tonight, I applaud them,” he said. “I’m humbled. It’s a privilege, and I don’t take these moments lightly.”
Over the years, Ron has documented hundreds of our programs and initiatives—from community engagement events to behind-the-scenes moments—helping to highlight the human side of policing.
The ceremony recognized not only Ron’s career, but the vital role storytelling plays in building understanding between police and the communities we serve.
