Constable Peter De Quintal teams up with TVO Kids to deliver bicycle safety tips

Constable Peter De Quintal teamed up with TVO Kids to go on air and speak about the importance of bicycle safety and tips for children. The 12 Division constable has been hosting bike rodeos for Grade four and five students this year. The rodeos improve students’ skills by putting them through a series of obstacle courses to learn how to react to obstacles and scan the road ahead for traffic, how to signal their intentions on the road as well as improve their balance, braking and turning. De Quintal says since Toronto is becoming a more bike-friendly city, it is important for children to know how to navigate the streets and roads in their community in a safe manner. He also stressed the importance of wearing a helmet and ensuring you get the right fit. There are five main things to know when riding your bike, says De Quintal. Use your arm signals to indicate when you are turning or stopping Always wear a helmet when riding your bike Remember to the ABCs on your bicycle – Air, Brake and Chain (Check that your tires are inflated, brakes and chain are working) When you ride at night, wear reflective clothing or have a light on Keep a bell on your bicycle so that you can warn people in case they don’t see you
