D/C Jeffrey Northrup Honoured on Plaque to our Fallen Officers at @TorontoPolice HQ
Detective Constable Jeff Northrup’s name has been added to the Toronto Police Military Veterans Association plaque honoring Service members who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Chief James Ramer and Margaret Northrup, the fallen officer’s widow, unveiled the plate at police headquarters lobby on June 21. “Jeff inspired countless officers over his 31-year tenure with the Toronto Police Service,” he said. “He not only loved his job, but took immense pride in serving and protecting our communities. Today, Jeff’s name joins a terribly long list of noble, brave and compassionate officers, a list that acts as a daily reminder of the supreme sacrifice made by members of the Toronto Police Service in the performance of their duties.” Staff Superintendent Peter Code was the Master of Ceremony. “As a 19-year-old cadet working for the Toronto Police Service down the hall at headquarters front desk, I would quite often look at these names and read each of them,” he said. “I never really attached the true significance of the sacrifices they made for all of us.” That changed in 1994 with the death of Constable Todd Baylis who was his colleague and friend. “Today, I run down the list, name by name, which I cannot read and cannot hear without the triggering of emotion,” said Code. “Names which will be only names to many of you but, which to many of us, summon up face after face, full of honesty and goodness, pride, duty and dedication to keeping our city and all those that are in it safe. “From the event in 1994, I have changed the way I think of each and every name on this list and I truly believe in my heart that as future generations come and go, this same honour, respect and debt of gratitude that we give here today will continue to be given to all the names that are on this list.” Northrup’s name is the 27th to be added to the memorial plaque.
