- FIFA World Cup 2026™Accreditation Process
Notice of Collection for FIFA World Cup 2026™Accreditation Process
This Notice of Collection explains how personal information is collected, used, and disclosed as part of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ accreditation process. It outlines the role of the Toronto Police Service (TPS) in conducting accreditation‑related background checks for a subset of applicants, the legal authority under which this information is handled, and the limits on TPS’s use and disclosure of personal information.
Please note, this accreditation is not part of the Toronto Police Service’s regular Police Record Check program. Please refer to the Police Record Check page.
Effective date: April 2026
Purpose of Collection
All applicants seeking FIFA World Cup 2026™ credentials for official match coverage areas and related events are required to complete the accreditation process established by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or its affiliates and/or subsidiaries (collectively, “FIFA”). This process includes submitting their personal information to FIFA and providing consent for a background check.
Applicants consented to their personal information being shared with relevant law enforcement agencies as part of this accreditation process. A subset of applications were processed by Toronto Police Service (“TPS”).
Where applicable, TPS collects, accesses, uses and discloses personal information for the sole purpose of completing accreditation-related background checks. The collection, use and disclosure of personal information is strictly limited to the purposes for which consent was originally provided to FIFA by each applicant.
Accreditation outcomes are not communicated by TPS. Applicants seeking information regarding the status or result of their accreditation must contact FIFA directly.
As TPS does not directly control the accreditation intake process, this Notice of Collection is made publicly available to ensure transparency regarding TPS’s role in the accreditation related background check process.
Legal Authority for Collection
For the applicants processed by TPS, personal information is collected and used for the purposes set out above, subject to your written consent, under the authority of:
- Sections 6.3(2) and 6.3(3) of the Criminal Records Act, R.S.C. 1985, c.C-47 (as amended);
- Section 2(1)(a) of the Criminal Record Regulations, SOR/2000-303 (as amended); and
- Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Police Record Checks Reform Act, 2015, S.O. 2015, Chapter 30.
The personal information will be used to verify your identity and to conduct your requested background check, police records check and/or vulnerable sector check.
In addition, the collection, use and disclosure of personal information by TPS is authorized under Section 31 of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. M.56 (“MFIPPA”), and notice is provided in accordance with Section 29(2) of MFIPPA.
