Frequently Asked Questions
-
What do we collect?
The Toronto Police Museum & Discovery Centre accepts donations based on 4 major categories:
- Archival Materials: Documents, manuscripts, oral histories, maps, music, and personal papers.
- Objects: Art, badges, policing machines/devices, weapons, clothing and more.
- Photographs: Photos of people, places, and things (officers, events, policing memorabilia etc.)
- Published Materials: Books, pamphlets, and magazines.
-
What do we NOT collect?
The process of cataloguing, storing, and conserving collections is costly and requires a considerable investment of time. For this reason, the Museum & Discovery Centre often decides not to acquire donations offered to us.
- Materials that are not related to Canadian or Toronto history fall outside of what we collect.
- We do not collect materials that are in very poor condition except under exceptional circumstances.
- We do not accept materials that we already have in large quantities within our Museum.
- We do not accept organic materials.
-
How do I find out if my donation may be of interest to the Museum & Discovery Centre?
Please send us an email at [email protected] and our staff will assist in determining if your donation suits our collections. You may be asked to provide further details regarding your donation, so please be prepared to provide as much as possible.
Please give our staff 30 days to respond to your inquiries.
-
Does the Museum & Discovery Centre take drop-off or mail donations?
Please do not drop-off or mail donations to the Museum & Discovery Centre unless expressly told to do so. A member of our staff will make an appointment with you when we are ready to receive your donation.
-
How long can the process take?
The acquisition process can take anywhere between 3-9 months depending on the materials being donated. We will work as quickly as possible to have your donation acquired, but please be prepared to extend patience during this process.
-
Can I have my donation returned to me, my family, or my heirs, at my request?
Once a material is acquired into the Toronto Police Service Museum & Discovery Centre collections, it becomes property of the Museum. The Museum may choose to display, store or otherwise interpret it according to our practices.
Transfer of ownership will be issued via a Deed of Gift that you will receive from our team once we have acquired your donation.
Requests for Reproduction and Copyright
The Toronto Police Service Museum & Discovery Centre will make, in certain cases, an allowance for researchers/customers to make print OR digital copies of archival materials unless donors or copyright holders have expressly prohibited reproduction.
If there is no prohibition to reproduce an archival material, a reproduction request must be made via our email.
- Reproduction request: It is as simple as it sounds – send us an email explaining what it is you want reproduced and our staff will work with you to confirm if it is possible.
A museum staff will process your request and then work with you to fill out the Permission to Publish form. Please give our staff 30 days to process your request.
